What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is defined as any one or more dental treatments that improve the beauty of your smile and/or improve your overall dental health. Cosmetic dentistry helps you to achieve a more attractive and beautiful smile, improving your self-esteem and sometimes leading to a more successful lifestyle.
Cosmetic dentistry can include a wide number of techniques, from re-contouring the teeth or gum-line, to placing porcelain veneers on a number of teeth. Although many general dentists claim to practice some aspect of cosmetic dentistry, it takes an experienced and licensed specialist to successfully master the techniques, skills, materials, and high-tech equipment. Cosmetic dentistry techniques are not taught in general dentistry schools and many general dentists do not keep up-to-date on the current research and cutting-edge procedures. Some procedures we routinely perform at Dr. Scheele's office include:
Veneers
Porcelain laminate veneers are a thin layer placed over the teeth to enhance or correct their appearance. Whether to close spaces, increase size, change color, or straighten teeth, veneers are one of the most exciting new procedures we provide.
Crowns
Crowns are used to restore both anterior and posterior teeth that have been broken or are at high risk of doing so due to old, over-sized fillings or fractures. There are a variety of materials used to construct these, which produce crowns that look and feel like your real teeth.
Bridges
Bridges are fixed or non-removable prosthesis that are constructed to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the existing space are used to anchor the bridge to restore functionality as well as improve the look of the teeth. At Dr. Scheele's office we are able to construct beautiful porcelain over metal, as well as full porcelain and resin-based bridges.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
Resin and ceramic fillings are now offered which replace old amalgam (silver or mercury fillings) that have darkened or become ugly over time. By using fillings that match the original tooth color, your smile can be dramatically improved. Fillings now become virtually invisible.
Whitening
Whitening teeth is one of the most popular and gratifying procedures we perform. We specialize in the use of the BriteSmile Professional Whitening Treatment. Britesmile is a light-activated process, which uses state-of-the-art technology with a gentle whitening gel. This process is extremely effective and the whole procedure lasts just over one hour. Rewards from this procedure can last for years.
Bonding
Composite resin bonding is used to repair fractures and cover teeth to enhance appearance. These procedures are usually accomplished in one appointment and with little or no discomfort. Bonding teeth can improve strength and usage, while creating a more beautiful smile.
Gingival Sculpting
Oversized and uneven gum lines can make teeth look slanted, unusually large, or crooked. We correct a "gummy smile" by sculpting the gum lines to better frame your teeth.
Tooth Contouring
This treatment is ideal for those who are happy with the color of their teeth, but don't like the exact shapes of the teeth because of small chips or slight crowding. We reshape the existing teeth to fit your smile.
Post and Core
Sometimes, due to decay or fractures, a tooth may be so damaged that the extent of the root is damaged and the portion of the teeth showing above the gum line is either not present or not sufficient to support a restoration like a crown on its own. That's where a post and core are most desirable.
